Perfumes 101: This you need to know before choosing a perfume

Choosing a perfume is often more difficult than expected. Fragrances are often linked to emotions and memories, so in a sense you are not only choosing a fragrance, but also how people will remember you. But how do you decide what the ideal perfume is for you? Does an Eau de Parfum suit you or rather an Eau de Toilette? What is the difference and how do you apply them best? With these tips Parfuma puts you on the right track.

WHAT KIND OF PERFUME SUITS YOU BEST?

(EXTRAIT DE) PARFUM

TOBACCO MANDARIN BY BYREDO

An Extrait de Parfum contains the highest
perfume concentration, 20 to 40 percent.

Choose an Extrait de Parfum if...
You love powerful perfumes and want to make a
statement with them, have a slightly higher budget
and are looking for a perfume that lasts very long. A
single spray will have you smelling great for a whole day.

EAU DE TOILETTE

BLU MEDITERRANEO BY ACQUA DI PARMA

An Eau de Toilette contains a perfume concentration of
5 to 10 percent. As a result, the scent does not linger as long and so you need to top up on perfume during the day.

Choose an Eau de Toilette if...
You're looking for an everyday, fresh scent
but don't want to be overly perfumed.

EAU DE PARFUM

NOT A PERFUME BY JULLIETE HAS A GUN

An Eau de Parfum contains a slightly lower
perfume concentration than an Extrait de
Parfum, 10 to 20 percent.

Choose an Eau de Parfum if...
You're looking for a perfume with a deep scent that
lingers for a long time and therefore
lasts a long time.

EAU DE COLOGNE

CYPRESS & GRAPEVINE BY JO MALONE LONDON

An Eau de Cologne is the least powerful perfume with
a perfume concentration of only 2 to 4 percent. Because
of the low concentration, they dissipate very quickly.

Choose an Eau de Cologne if...
You are looking for a perfume to refresh yourself
while traveling, on a hot day or when you are tired.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EAU DE PARFUM AND AN EAU DE TOILETTE

So how do you choose between the two variants? They will certainly smell similar, but not exactly the same. Due to the higher concentration of fragrance ingredients in an Eau de Parfum, certain scents can develop differently on the skin. For example, they can be deeper, sharper or sweeter than the scents of an Eau de Toilette.

TIP: Do you suffer from dry skin?
Then it's best to look for an extrait de parfum.

'NOTES' IN A PERFUME

The fragrance ingredients in a perfume are also called notes.

TOP: Are the scents that you smell immediately after spraying.
HEART: Follow the top notes and are the most important.
BASE: Are the scents that ultimately remain after the top and heart notes have faded. They allow the fragrance
to linger for hours.

TIP: Are you looking for a new fragrance? Then first take a look at the fragrance notes of a perfume you already know and like smelling. This way you can specifically search for a scent that suits you.

APPLICATION DO'S AND DON'TS

DO'S

» Test the perfume on your skin before you buy.
Every perfume smells different on everyone.

» Spray the perfume from about 20 cm and then let it soak in.

» Apply the perfume to warm areas such as
the wrists, neck, chest and behind the earlobes.

» Use body products with a similar scent or from the same brand to make your perfume stand out even more.

DON'TS

» Do not rub or dab your perfume when
applying, this will remove the scent.

» Do not apply your perfume to your clothes. Perfume can damage your clothes (or precious metals) and leave stains.

» Don't perfume too much. After all, you get
used to the scent so you don't smell it anymore.
